Police
Police have seen a slight rise of dwelling, SCAM and rogue trader type offences over recent months in South Somerset and surrounding counties, where the victims have been elderly. It is believed the offenders committing these offences are intentionally targeting the elderly.
These offences have included the following type distraction techniques by offenders to gain entry to premises:
- Offenders claim they are from the waterboard and there is a problem with the victim's water supply. One will keep the victim distracted whilst another with search the premises looking for cash/jewellery to be stolen. They will state they need to test the water/get a sample or turn off the supply. No identification shown
- Offenders have claimed they needed to gain entry to premises to access the stop tap and sited they were from "Transco"
- Offenders have purported to be from the gas company and needed to gain entry to check there isn't a gas leak. They have then asked to change up bank notes with the victim in a method to identify where monies are hidden
Burglars won't go to the trouble of breaking in if they can just knock and be invited in. So always be on your guard when anyone you're not expecting - a man, a woman or even a child - turns up at your door.
Police advice is to follow the DOORSTEP Code:
- Don't open the door without using the Doorstep Code
- Observe first - always look through a window or door viewer
- Only open the door after connecting a chain or limiter
- Refuse entry if you are not satisfied
- Switch on outside lights when it's dark to see who's there
- Think 'thief' - ask to see an identity card and check it closely
- Ensure strangers are not left alone in your home
- Protect yourself - if you are worried ring the police. Contact Avon and Somerset Police by calling on 101.
